NordVPN is one of the most recognized names in the VPN industry — and for good reason. Founded in 2012 and headquartered in Panama (outside the 14 Eyes surveillance alliance), it has built a reputation for combining fast speeds, robust security, and a massive server network into a polished, user-friendly package.

But this isn't your typical NordVPN review. At BestProxyFinder, we evaluate VPN services through the lens of proxy users — people who need reliable IP rotation, SOCKS5 connections, dedicated IPs, and the ability to bypass sophisticated anti-bot systems. So the question isn't just "Is NordVPN good?" — it's "Is NordVPN good for proxy-adjacent use cases?"

What Is NordVPN?

NordVPN is a virtual private network service operated by Nord Security, a cybersecurity company headquartered in Panama. Launched in 2012, it has grown into one of the world's largest consumer VPN providers, serving millions of users globally.

The service encrypts your internet traffic and routes it through one of 7,000+ servers spread across 118 countries, masking your real IP address and protecting your data from snooping. NordVPN uses AES-256 encryption — the same standard used by governments and intelligence agencies — and supports multiple protocols including its proprietary NordLynx (built on WireGuard), OpenVPN, and IKEv2/IPSec.

What makes NordVPN particularly interesting for the BestProxyFinder audience is its built-in proxy functionality. Every NordVPN subscription includes access to SOCKS5 proxy servers, and the Chrome/Firefox browser extensions function as encrypted proxies — meaning you can use NordVPN in ways that go beyond a traditional VPN tunnel.

NordVPN Speed and Performance (Tested on NordLynx)

Speed is often the make-or-break factor for VPN users, and NordVPN delivers exceptional performance thanks to its NordLynx protocol. Built on the WireGuard framework, NordLynx adds a custom double NAT system that solves WireGuard's privacy limitations while preserving its blazing-fast speeds.

In our testing, NordVPN consistently ranked among the fastest VPNs available. Connecting to nearby servers showed minimal speed loss — typically under 5-8% reduction from base speeds. Even long-distance connections (US to Europe, Europe to Asia) maintained highly usable speeds for streaming, gaming, and large file transfers.

Here's a summary of our speed test results on a 500 Mbps base connection:

Server LocationDownload SpeedUpload SpeedPing
US (New York)462 Mbps198 Mbps11 ms
UK (London)438 Mbps176 Mbps38 ms
Germany (Frankfurt)421 Mbps162 Mbps45 ms
Japan (Tokyo)312 Mbps98 Mbps165 ms
Australia (Sydney)287 Mbps84 Mbps192 ms

These speeds place NordVPN comfortably in the top tier of VPN providers. The NordLynx protocol's efficiency means connection times are near-instant — typically under 2 seconds — and speeds remain consistent even during peak usage hours.

For proxy-oriented users, the SOCKS5 servers also showed strong performance since they skip the encryption overhead, delivering speeds very close to your base connection.

NordVPN vs. Proxies: Which Should You Use?

This is the question our readers care about most. NordVPN and dedicated proxy services serve overlapping but distinct purposes. Here's how they compare.

NordVPN Dedicated IPs vs. Datacenter Proxies

NordVPN offers dedicated IP addresses as an add-on — you get a static IP that only you use, available in the US, UK, Germany, France, and Netherlands. This is useful for accessing services that whitelist specific IPs, maintaining consistent online identity, or avoiding CAPTCHAs that trigger when your IP keeps changing.

However, NordVPN's dedicated IPs are recognizable as VPN/datacenter IPs by sophisticated detection systems. If you need IPs that appear as residential addresses — for example, for accessing sneaker sites, managing social media accounts, or ad verification — you'll still need dedicated residential proxy providers like IPRoyal or MarsProxies.

Can NordVPN Replace Residential Proxies for Scraping?

In short: not at scale. NordVPN gives you access to thousands of IP addresses across 118 countries, but you can't rotate through them programmatically the way you can with a rotating residential proxy pool. There's no API for IP rotation, no session control, and the connection process is designed for human use rather than automation.

That said, NordVPN's SOCKS5 proxy can be useful for lightweight scraping tasks, small-scale data collection, and accessing geo-restricted content from specific countries. For anything requiring thousands of requests or sophisticated anti-detection, dedicated proxy providers remain the better choice. Check our guides on residential proxies and datacenter proxies for heavy-duty scraping needs.

Deep Dive into NordVPN's Proxy Features

How to Configure NordVPN's SOCKS5 Proxy

Every NordVPN subscription includes access to SOCKS5 proxy servers — a feature that many users overlook. SOCKS5 proxies route your traffic through a proxy server without encryption, which means faster speeds at the cost of privacy. This makes them ideal for use cases where speed matters more than encryption, such as torrenting or running certain automation tools.

To use NordVPN's SOCKS5 proxy, you'll need to configure it manually in your application (browser, torrent client, or bot). NordVPN provides server addresses and your service credentials through the dashboard. The proxy supports both TCP and UDP traffic, and you can choose from servers across multiple countries.

Key SOCKS5 details:

  • Protocol: SOCKS5 (no encryption — use with VPN for privacy)
  • Authentication: Username/password from NordVPN dashboard
  • Ports: Configurable per application
  • Locations: Multiple countries available

The Chrome/Firefox Extension (Encrypted Proxy)

NordVPN's browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox deserve special attention. Unlike the full VPN app that tunnels all device traffic, the browser extension works as a lightweight encrypted proxy that only routes browser traffic. This makes it faster to connect, lighter on system resources, and useful when you only need to protect your browsing activity.

The extensions support split tunneling at the browser level — you can choose which websites go through the proxy and which don't. They also include CyberSec (ad/malware blocking) and WebRTC leak prevention. For users who need quick IP switching for browsing-based tasks, the extension is genuinely useful.

Standout Features for Advanced Users

Bypassing Firewalls with Obfuscated Servers

NordVPN's obfuscated servers disguise VPN traffic to look like regular HTTPS traffic. This is critical for users in countries with heavy internet censorship (China, Russia, Iran, UAE) or on restricted networks like corporate Wi-Fi or university networks that actively block VPN protocols.

In our testing, the obfuscated servers successfully bypassed deep packet inspection (DPI) on multiple test networks. Connection speeds were slower than standard NordLynx connections (expected, given the extra processing), but still usable for browsing, streaming, and communication.

Routing Traffic Safely with Double VPN

Double VPN (multi-hop) routes your traffic through two separate VPN servers, encrypting it twice. Your traffic goes from your device → Server A (encrypted) → Server B (encrypted again) → destination. This means even if one server is compromised, your traffic remains protected.

Available Double VPN routes include combinations like US → Canada, UK → Netherlands, and several others. While this feature adds latency (typically 20-40% slower than single-hop connections), it provides an extra layer of security that privacy-conscious users will appreciate.

Meshnet

Meshnet is one of NordVPN's more innovative features. It creates a private encrypted network between your devices (and optionally, other people's devices), allowing direct device-to-device connections. Use cases include remote access to your home computer, private file sharing, LAN gaming with friends across the globe, and routing your traffic through a trusted device in another location.

Threat Protection Pro

Available on Plus plans and above, Threat Protection Pro goes beyond basic VPN functionality. It scans downloads for malware, blocks trackers across browsers, and removes intrusive ads — even when you're not connected to a VPN server. Think of it as a lightweight security suite bundled with your VPN subscription.

NordVPN Pricing

NordVPN uses a tiered pricing structure across four plans, with the biggest savings on 2-year commitments. Here's the full breakdown:

PlanMonthly Price (2-Year)What's IncludedSavings
Basic€2.99/moVPN, SOCKS5 proxy, Threat Protection (lite)74%
Plus€3.49/moBasic + Threat Protection Pro, password manager76%
Complete€4.79/moPlus + 1TB encrypted cloud storage73%
Ultra€6.29/moComplete + Incogni data removal72%

Dedicated IP add-on: Available for an additional monthly fee on top of any plan. Currently offered in US, UK, Germany, France, and Netherlands.

All plans include a 30-day money-back guarantee. NordVPN accepts credit cards, PayPal, Google Pay, Amazon Pay, and various cryptocurrencies. VAT may apply depending on your location.

For most users, the Plus plan at €3.49/mo (2-year commitment) hits the sweet spot — you get the full VPN with SOCKS5 proxy, Threat Protection Pro, and the password manager. The Basic plan is fine if you only need VPN + proxy functionality without the extras.

Compared to dedicated proxy services, NordVPN pricing is extremely competitive if your needs are moderate. A basic residential proxy subscription typically starts at $15-30/month, whereas NordVPN gives you VPN + SOCKS5 proxy + security features from €2.99/mo. The trade-off, as discussed above, is that NordVPN can't match the IP diversity and rotation capabilities of dedicated proxy providers.

Customer Support

NordVPN provides 24/7 customer support through live chat and email. In our experience, the live chat is responsive — we typically received helpful answers within 2-3 minutes. The support agents are knowledgeable about both VPN and proxy configuration, which is a plus for our audience.

The self-service resources are excellent. NordVPN maintains an extensive knowledge base with detailed setup guides for every platform, troubleshooting articles, and FAQ sections. There are specific guides for configuring SOCKS5 proxies in popular torrent clients, browsers, and automation tools.

Email support is also available for more complex issues, with typical response times of 24-48 hours. While phone support isn't offered, the combination of 24/7 live chat and comprehensive documentation covers most support needs effectively.

Final Verdict: Is NordVPN Worth It in 2026?

NordVPN has earned its position as one of the top VPN services for a reason. The combination of NordLynx speeds, 7,000+ servers across 118 countries, and a genuinely privacy-respecting Panama jurisdiction makes it a strong all-around choice.

For BestProxyFinder readers specifically, NordVPN occupies an interesting middle ground. It's not a replacement for dedicated proxy services — you won't be running large-scale scraping operations or managing hundreds of social media accounts through NordVPN. But for users who need solid IP masking, SOCKS5 proxy access, dedicated IPs, and the ability to bypass geo-restrictions and firewalls, NordVPN delivers excellent value.

The SOCKS5 proxy inclusion alone sets it apart from many competitors. The browser extensions functioning as encrypted proxies add another layer of flexibility. And features like obfuscated servers, Double VPN, and Meshnet give advanced users tools that most VPN providers simply don't offer.

At €2.99/mo on the 2-year Basic plan, it's hard to argue against the value. If you need more than what NordVPN offers in terms of IP rotation and residential IPs, pair it with a dedicated proxy provider from our proxy provider reviews — NordVPN handles your general privacy and security, while a specialized proxy service handles your data operations.

Bottom line: NordVPN is an excellent VPN with genuine proxy utility. It's worth every cent for privacy-conscious users, and a solid companion tool for anyone in the proxy space.

Been using NordVPN for 3 years now and it keeps getting better. The NordLynx speeds are insane — barely notice any slowdown. I use the SOCKS5 proxy for torrenting and the browser extension for quick IP changes when browsing. The dedicated IP add-on is great for accessing my bank without triggering fraud alerts. Only downside is the price went up slightly at renewal, but still worth it.

PROS: Incredible speeds, SOCKS5 proxy is a hidden gem, dedicated IP works perfectly for banking
CONS: Renewal price higher than intro, wish dedicated IP was included in the base plan

Switched from ExpressVPN to NordVPN mostly for the SOCKS5 proxy feature. I run a few automation tools that need proxy connections and NordVPN handles it well for my scale. The obfuscated servers are a lifesaver when I travel to the Middle East for work — they consistently get through where other VPNs fail. Support is responsive and actually helpful.

PROS: SOCKS5 proxy works great with automation tools, obfuscated servers are reliable, good support
CONS: Can't rotate IPs automatically, limited dedicated IP locations

Solid VPN for the price. I mainly use it for privacy and streaming — works with Netflix US, UK, and Japan without issues. The Threat Protection Pro catches a surprising amount of trackers and sketchy downloads. My only complaint is that the SOCKS5 proxy gives you a single IP per server location, so if that IP gets blocked somewhere you're stuck. For serious proxy needs I still use a separate residential proxy service, but for everyday VPN use NordVPN is hard to beat.

PROS: Great for streaming, Threat Protection Pro is useful, fast speeds
CONS: SOCKS5 limited to single IP, not suitable for heavy proxy use cases
